Purpose
The Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) is a year-long professional development designed specifically to welcome and onboard new faculty by providing, support, guidance and training.
Audience
Participation in the Teaching & Learning Academy is required for all new full-time faculty at South Texas College. Lecturers are strongly encouraged but not required to attend.
Time Commitment
TLA participants will meet for 7 sessions in the fall semester. Each session is 3 hours in duration.
Format
A mix of online and in person sessions.
Benefits
TLA participants will become part of a close-knit community, as they integrate into the South Texas College (STC) family. During the fall semester, faculty will learn about the STC culture, policies and assessment processes. In the spring semester, faculty will participate in FOCUS Academy to learn and exchange best practices in teaching that positively impact student success. Topics include:
- South Texas College’s culture, policies and faculty evaluation process.
- Characteristics of our student population.
- Student rights and responsibilities.
- College resources for student success.
- Faculty and student evaluations.
- Planning and scaffolding instruction.
- Research-based strategies to promote active learning and engagement.
- Instructional technologies.
- Formative assessment to gauge student learning.
- Reflective practices for continuous growth as an educator.
