Purpose
Focus On Creating Ultimate Student Success (FOCUS) Academy is designed to provide in-depth training on andragogy and pedagogy. For a period of one semester, participants are immersed in an interactive classroom environment and explore research-based teaching practices, active learning strategies and instructional technologies to incorporate in their own teaching.
Audience
Participation in FOCUS Academy is required for all new full-time faculty at South Texas College. Lecturers are strongly encouraged but not required to attend.
Time Commitment
FOCUS participants will meet for 7 sessions in the spring semester. Each session is 3 hours in duration.
Format
A mix of online and in person sessions.

FOCUS Academy provides an embedded model of professional development that emphasizes reflective practices, peer collaboration and instructional innovation. Through structured activities such as classroom observations and dialogue, participants engage in meaningful conversations about student learning and teaching strategies. Topics include:
- Cultivating a sense of belonging and scaffolding learning.
- Designing engaging lesson plans and rounds observations.
- Classroom talk and questioning.
- Collaborative groupwork.
- Writing to learn and literacy strategies.
- Assessment.
- Reflective practices for continuous growth as an educator.
