Electronic Health Record SpecialistCertificate

Launch your career in healthcare with our one-semester Electronic Health Record (EHR) Specialist certificate. This program prepares you for entry-level roles where you’ll support the transition from paper-based records to electronic systems. You’ll gain hands-on experience with electronic health records software while learning essential administrative and non-clinical skills used in patient care documentation.

Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including clinics, hospitals, and physicians' offices. This certificate also provides a strong foundation for continued education and career advancement in Health Information Technology.

Medical Coding Specialist Certificate

Turn medical data into meaningful information. The Medical Coding Specialist certificate equips you with the skills to review health records, identify diagnoses and procedures, and assign accurate medical codes used for billing, research, quality improvement, and compliance.

You’ll be prepared for opportunities in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, consulting firms, and even remote work settings. As part of the program, you’ll complete a practicum to gain real-world experience.

Graduates are eligible to pursue nationally recognized AHIMA credentials, including the CCA, CCS, or CCS-P—helping you stand out in a competitive and high-demand field. Health Information TechnologyAssociate of Applied Science

Build a career at the intersection of healthcare and technology. The Associate Degree in Health Information Technology prepares you for roles as a Health Information Technician—professionals who work behind the scenes to ensure health data is accurate, secure, and accessible.

You’ll learn how to manage health information systems, analyze and code clinical data, and support healthcare operations through data-driven decision-making. Your skills will contribute to areas such as reimbursement, compliance, quality improvement, and research.

The program includes practicums/capstone courses that provide valuable real-world experience. Graduates are also prepared to sit for the nationally recognized RHIT credentialing exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), positioning them for success in a fast-growing, high-demand field.

Health information technicians work in a multitude of settings in the healthcare industry, from hospitals, office-based physicians, nursing homes, home health agencies, mental health facilities and public health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, law and insurance firms, health product vendors, private coding agencies, consulting firms and home offices.

Clinical Requirements for Practicum

  • Clinical requirements include a criminal background check, current immunization status, clear tuberculosis screen, a drug and alcohol urine screen, current CPR status, current accident/health insurance, meeting technical standards of the Health Information Technology Program, and maintenance of a COMPLIO account throughout the program. Application Requirements

  1. Participate in the required Prospective Student Information Session at the Health Science Professions Campus. For the session schedule, visit the Health Information Technology website at https://www.southtexascollege.edu/hit.
  2. Be admitted to the college as a high school graduate or GED equivalent, except for dual credit students.
  3. AAS Degree Option: Meet TSI College Readiness Standards or meet TSI exemption standards.
  4. Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all courses completed at STC.

Graduation Requirements

To earn the Electronic Health Record Certificate, the Medical Coding Specialist Certificate or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology, a student must meet all college graduation requirements and complete all coursework as prescribed in the specific degree plan with a minimum grade of “C.”
