Senate Bill 17

Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 17, "Responsibility of Governing Boards Regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives," which went into effect on January 1, 2024. Senate Bill 17 prohibits South Texas College from engaging in certain diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, with limited exceptions. Public institutions of higher education in the state cannot establish or maintain a "diverse, equity, and inclusion office" or engage in certain prohibited practices and activities.

College departments are responsible for assessing programs, services, and operations to make necessary adjustments to comply with Senate Bill 17.

The Texas Association of School Boards Community College Services has provided useful FAQs to facilitate a general understanding of the law and the College's responsibilities. The guidance is broad, non-exhaustive, and may not cover every specific situation.
