As you take your first steps in your STC journey, you may find that keeping our advisor and your student responsibilities in mind can make a real difference in meeting your objectives.

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Provide information about STC programs, academic policies and procedures, CORE curriculum, and graduation requirements.
  • Be accessible, approachable, understanding, and timely.
  • Be knowledgeable about STC resources and support services.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to students when needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Student Responsibilities

  • Be prepared for your advising session with questions and by asking for clarification.
  • Track academic progress with advising tools such as:
  • Use appropriate college resources and seek help when necessary.
  • Be aware of important personal, academic, and financial dates.
  • Develop decision-making skills.

How to Prepare for Your Advising Session

  • Develop your educational plan and understand how you will meet your goals.
  • Identify and use resources to help achieve your academic, personal, and career goals.
  • Understand and review your degree with DegreeWorks to enroll in courses that prioritize your progress and career pathway. 

Program Exploration

  • Evaluate your interests: Career Coach
  • Identify your future career to confirm your major.
  • Prepare questions regarding programs and courses.

Program and Course Planning 

Nearing STC Program Completion

  • Keep key dates, policies, and procedures in mind (Provided at STC website)
  • Verify that DegreeWorks is at 98% or above
  • Register for graduation ceremony
  • Visit Career and Employment Services to update your resume and plan your job search

When Things Don’t Go as Planned
