Exit Ware Road, go South on Ware Road to Military Highway, TC located at the corner of Ware Rd. and Military Hwy.

Orientation Schedule (required):
Applicants must attend the program orientation.  Students interested in the program will be guided through the application process.

The Fall 2001 MLR Program is a partnership between South Texas College, Ford Motor Company, RGV Ford Dealers, Workforce Solutions and Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement (VIDA) and Development Corporation of McAllen.


Note: Students that do not have their GED or High School Diploma will be referred to a Workforce Solution's GED training provider or Region One's Education Service Center Adult and Basic Education Program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Automotive Technology
Program for MLR Technicians

Ford Certified Maintenance and Light Repair technicians know the skills required to perform regular maintenance, light repairs and parts installation on all types of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury automobiles and light trucks.  Successful students in this program will achieve Ford Motor Company's Maintenance and Light Repair certification, which includes:

A trained and certified light line technician is an expert in diagnosing and solving problems with a keen eye for details.  If you are mechanically inclin3d and interested in an accelerated program, the MLR curriculum will get you into the field of automotive technology quickly.  This certificate Program can be applied towards completion of the A.A.S. Degree in Automotive Technology.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hands-On-Training

This 9 month program offered at South Texas College, has been developed in partnership with Ford Motor Company to prepare students with the basic skills necessary to gain employment as a Maintenance and Light Repair Technician.  Nearly 50 percent of your training is hands-on.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Employment Opportunities

The MLR program was initiated by Ford Motor Company and its dealers to address the national shortage of trained dealer technicians industry wide.  Dealers in partnership with STC, offer co-op opportunities while in the program and full-time employment opportunities upon completion.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Job Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for automotive technicians are expected to remain plentiful, especially for those with formal training.  The reported shortage nationwide n 1998 was 60,000; and this number grows annually by approximately 15,000.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Earning Potentials

Technicians in the Texas area earn approximately $25,000 - $80,000 per year.  Salaries vary depending upon experience, training and geographical location.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Career Advancement

Experienced Maintenance and Light Repair technicians may advance to a Master Certified Technician, supervisory or managerial positions, or may continue their education to specialize in other areas of the automotive field.  Students will earn 35 college credits through the MLR Program.
