Program Information Brief

The Automotive Technology Program is designed to prepare students for employment in the high technology automotive service industry.

In the Automotive Technology Certificate and Associate at Applied Science Degree programs, students will gain knowledge in automotive air conditioning, electrical systems, fuel injection, transmissions, and transaxles, engine performance, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, and computerized automotive control systems. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on learning in the labs to develop diagnostic and troubleshooting skills as well as repair procedures.  Graduates of the Automotive Technology Program are typically placed in dealerships, independent garages, and specialty automotive repair facilities. Courses taken for completion of the Certificate Program can be applied towards completion of the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Automotive Technology.

Program Entry Requirements:  Complete an application for admission, satisfy the assessment requirements, and attend any required information or registration session. Students may start any term.


Graduation Requirements:  To earn the Automotive Technology ASS Degree or Certificate, a student must complete all course work as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

 

What Kind of Work Will I Do?
· Service automobiles and light trucks to keep them from developing mechanical problems (preventive maintenance).
· Make systematic examinations, adjustments, repair, and replace defective components on cars and light trucks.
· Diagnose driveablity problems so that proper repair can be made, especially on computer controlled vehicles.
· Use testing equipment such as engine analyzers, scan tools, lab scopes, computers, and other electronic and mechanical test equipment.
· Prepare reports of work accomplished and customer billing statements.

What Skills and Abilities Will I Need?
· Be goal oriented.
· Have good communication skills.
· Be able to work as a team.
· Be able to read and comprehend technical information from both print and electronic media.
· Be able to use hand and power tools.
· Be able to trace electronic circuits by following schematic diagrams.
· Be able to maintain a high frustration tolerance when troubleshooting computer controlled systems.
· Be able to lift and carry objects up to 60 pounds.

What Else Should I Consider about this Program or Career choice?
· Good basic math and reading skills are essential.
· Students must provide their own hand tools.
· Average starting salaries typically range from $16,000 to $60,000 per year depending on size, type, and location of repair facility.
