During
childhood, my family moved often. There
were two comforting constants: the factory-second books given to me by my
grandfather who worked at the Rand McNally publishing plant in Gary, IN,
and magazines like Ranger Rick that my parents splurged for. Art and nature
were always important to me, even when we lived in St. Louis for several years. There, I spent
many Saturdays at the St Louis
Art Museum, mesmerized
by the surrounding artwork. In college, I worked as an archeological
illustrator to pay my tuition. This led me on several overseas adventures
while drawing for excavation teams, and encouraged my interest not only in
natural history but also human history. Living in North
Africa for several summers whetted my appetite to live
permanently someplace where the food and the weather were both hotter. I've
found that home here in the Rio Grande Valley, and feel extremely fortunate
to be living life in this region of magic realism, reveling in the subtle
beauty of the place, and hopefully returning some of the enthusiasm it brings
to me by instilling that wonder and enthusiasm in my students.
