18. LEARNING TOOLS

Learning the principles and concepts of Biology is a challenging endeavor. However, several helpful Learning Tools are available. As was mentioned earlier (page 16) the most important learning tool is your textbook. Your textbook is a 24-hour learning tool, which we will discuss again on another page (page 19). Most textbooks have a variety of learning tools included within the textbook. However, many of these textbook learning tools usually cover a broader area than what your instructor intends to cover for your class.

The learning aids included on your instructor's web site, Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice, are specifically geared to the course as it is taught. The "CYBER OFFICE" has been designed to assist and facilitate your learning. This page briefly mentions the Learning Tools available on "Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice" (learning tools).

I hope you will visit "Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice often", because I believe it will help you succeed in your class.

  Lecture Outlines

The Lecture outlines are quick guides to a lecture's organization. Use them when you study. The Lecture outlines on Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice are organized according to biological concepts and can be found on the Learning Tools page.

Lecture Objectives

The Lecture objectives (often called learning objectives) indicate what you must be able to do in order to demonstrate mastery (understanding key ideas) of the material covered in the lecture. The Lecture objectives on Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice are organized according to biological concepts and can be found on the Learning Tools page.

Key Terms

A Key Term list emphasizes important and essential terms you need to understand in order to master the material covered in the lecture. Author Richard Peck said that words are the bricks of your writing, and you need a larger supply than you have. In order to be able to communicate about biology -- read, write or talk, you need to build a memorized vocaulary list of specialized terms used in the field of biology. The Key Term Lists on Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice are organized according to biological concepts and can be found on the Learning Tools page.

Self Review Quizzes

The self review questions test your knowledge of important concepts and applications, and help you make connections. Most of the material, but not necessarily all (due to time constraints during some semesters), has usually been covered during lectures. These self quizzes, with answers, can serve as an efficient review before an exam. The Self Review Quizzes on Dr. Nilsson's CyberOffice are organized according to biological concepts and can be found on the Learning Tools page.
