General Biology II Figure Discussions

(To avoid confusion, hopefully, this spring 2012 semester these instructions have been updated to include both General Biology I and II.)

Figures are very important. That is why your textbook author selected to include a specific figure in your textbook.

This semester all figures are posted on Blackboard, in the folder also containing the bulletin board. As we progress through the semester, one or two figures not posted at the beginning of the semester may be included. (The instructor will notify you if this happens.) All Figure Discussions are due near the end of the semester when most assignments are due (see the Semester Calendar)

Where should you discuss? The figure discussions take place on Blackboard in the regular course shell in a folder called Figure Discussions. (Unlike all other class discussions, which will take place in the Town Hall course shell.)

What should you discuss? You must discuss the textbook figures from the Mader textbook illustrated in the Figure Discussions folder, and you must show that you have spent some time looking at the selected figure, have read the text around the figure in your textbook, and that you have been thinking about it. There is not just one "correct thing" to say -- there is plenty of things that you can say about each figure! The textbook will probably be a good place for ideas about what to say, or you might get ideas from navigating the Internet about the figure topic, or just listening to each other when several messages are posted.

Minimum Requirements: The minimum requirement is two messages per figure -- minimum one original "created message" (starting a thread) 50 words about the figure content -- for each figure, and one reply per figure to another student -- OR--- do more than one original created message, e.g., ask questions if you don't quite understand the figure, or reflect on something. Learning can take place if students exchange ideas about what they see and how they interpret a figure, so the hope is that you will do more than the two required posting per bulletin board and make this a "discussion". NOTE: If you post more than one message, the other messages do NOT have to be 50 words.

Plagiarism Note: I don't like to write this, but it is necessary. If the instructor suspects plagiarism -- just copying either another students work, or just copying the figure caption in the book, the message will be locked. Students often do not understand what is PLAGIARISM, so no other action will be taken (in this assignment) despite the fact that this is CHEATING. The student will "just" be blocked from further postings in this assignment and EARN a zero as the grade for the assignment. (If a message is PLAGIARIZED the message dated first will be allowed...)
