About the Valley Scholars Program

Helping academically talented and highly motivated students be successful in college

The Valley Scholars Program was established in 1997 with a mission “to provide financial support, encouragement, mentoring, and campus-based work that helps academically talented and highly motivated students be successful in college.” The mission statement serves as a blueprint for planning and implementing support programs that help Valley Scholars succeed in college.

The purpose of the Valley Scholars Program is to navigate STC students through the college-going process while building their aptitude, confidence-level, and experience to become leaders that contribute to the socioeconomic future of Hidalgo and Starr Counties. The Valley Scholars Program recruits STC students who graduated within the top 10% of their high school class and offers support services in scholarships, advisement, registration, and participation in the STC Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society.

Since the Program’s inception, more than 500 participants matriculated to either STC’s own bachelor programs or transferred to such institutions as the University of Texas Pan-American, Texas A&M University, University of California and Emerson College.

All of the proceeds from “A Night with the Stars” will benefit the Valley Scholars Program. The Valley Scholars Program hopes to raise sufficient funds through this event to fund the education of the next class of Valley Scholars.

It was a blessing to have received the Valley Scholars Scholarship and it was my mentor, Dr. Ramiro R. Casso, who believed in me and inspired, motivated and encouraged me to continue my education to pursue a Medical Degree.
