A Tribute to Star Supports of Education

Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.

Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. was elected to the Texas Senate in November 1990, having first served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives.

During the 80th Legislative Session, Senator Lucio made tremendous inroads in the field of health care and education. Not only is he already known as Father of the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC), but he began the legislative process that eventually lead to the creation of a University of Texas Health Science Center Rio Grande Valley and that will provide South Texans a full-fledged medical school. He also laid the foundation for a future public law school in the area and will continue championing that effort.

Most importantly, he authored Senate Bill 251 that resulted in the creation of South Texas Community College in September 1993.

Former Representative Roberto Gutierrez

Roberto Gutierrez of McAllen served as the state representative for House District 41 from 1991 to 2004. For his public accomplishments, many state organizations have recognized him, including The University of Texas System and The Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education.

As state representative, he introduced House Bill 1102 that resulted in the creation of South Texas Community College. He also provided efficient and effective service for his constituents and the community, which have earned him recognition from The Friends of the UT-Pan American Library, Amigos de Bomberos, South Texas Community College and South Texas Vocational Technology. In 1991, The House of Representatives appointed Rep. Gutierrez to the House/Senate Select Committee on Higher Education and served as its only freshman member.

As Class VII president, I learned great leadership skills and I know that the help I received as a Valley Scholar student would not have been possible without the assistance of our community, mentors and sponsors.
