STC to offer specialized Medical and Business Spanish courses in ‘07
Are you in the healthcare or business industry and find yourself short of words when trying to communicate with your Spanish speaking clients or patients? This is a growing trend in the United States as Spanish speaking populations continue to increase. STC has a solution to this growing concern with its Medical and Business Spanish courses. “With the tremendous economic development taking place in the Valley, healthcare and business professionals are coming to the area from around the country to speed the expansion and sometimes lack the knowledge of technical terminology or cultural norms for dealing with Spanish speaking or Mexican natives,” said Elisa Pastor, interim program chair of the World Languages Department at STC. “We want professionals and students to take advantage of these classes so they can learn specific terminology related to their subject areas, as well as garner insight into cultural perspectives and political issues they may impact their work. These courses offer building blocks for added career success.” The Business Spanish course delivers a pragmatic, “real-world” business language and culture training program that enables students and those already working in the industry to easily master the language in a business setting. Students will practice Spanish communication using key vocabulary terms to different business contexts such as interviews, insurance, traveling, banking, international commerce, industry, import & export and NAFTA just mention a few. This course also explores contemporary cultural issues and Spanish literature that will help the student improve their ability to interact with clients. The Medical Spanish course provides students, nurses, doctors, counselor, or any other healthcare professional an opportunity to learn Spanish in the medical setting. The class focuses on the development of communication between a doctor-patient, a nurse-patient among many more. Both the Medical and Business Spanish courses are also offered online to provide students, health care and business professionals, who cannot attend the face-to-face classes an opportunity to learn and practice Spanish in their own time.
