100 students taking advantage of STC’s Bachelor of Applied Technology Program

Approximately 100 students are following the Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) Degree Program recently offered by South Texas College.

“We just started offering the BAT in fall of 2005 and look where we are just one year later,” said Dr. Ali Esmaeili, associate dean for the college’s Bachelor Programs and University Relations. “It’s amazing the response we have seen from the community for this opportunity. I knew that interest would build, but we have jumped in enrollment in the program more than 100% in just one year!”

The college expects its first class of BAT students to graduate in May 2007. Between 11 and 15 students anticipate graduating depending on course completion in the spring semester.

“This is such an exciting time for the program and for our students,” added Dr. Esmaeili. “Our typical student is older, working full time and juggling a family and other obligations with a full course load. I am amazed at the accomplishments of these individuals and look forward to celebrating with them this spring. It will be an honor to hand out those diplomas and a moment that no one at STC will ever forget.”

Students enrolled in the BAT Program will be prepared for a variety of career opportunities, including office management, paralegal management, plant supervisor, loan officer and supply chain management. Through the program, students have access to free tutoring in a variety of subjects, flexible course schedule, financial aid, a student support club, leadership activities, internships, mentorships, business networking events, job placement and a variety of other resources to ensure their academic and personal success.

“We aren’t looking just to get students passed and through the program,” said Dr. Esmaeili. “We are looking at their long term success. We want them to get promoted, take on new responsibility and go on to earn their MBA or master’s in another subject at The University of Texas-Pan American. The BAT Program offers these students the keys to success, but it is up to them what doors they open with them.”
