STC’s Starr County Campus Hosted Its 7th Annual Recognition Celebration

Event Honored Spring 2006 Graduates

South Texas College’s Starr County Campus hosted its 7th annual Recognition Celebration honoring spring 2006 graduates. The event was held at the amphitheater at STC’s Starr County Campus in Rio Grande City, TX, on Friday May 5, 2006.

“We are so pleased to have 170 students from the Starr County Campus graduating this year,” said Manuel Benavidez, Jr., Member of the Board of Trustees for STC and Director of Transportation for the Rio Grande City ISD. “The campus fills a vital need in the area to assist students in continuing their education and gaining essential skills to help them succeed in a competitive job market. We are seeing increasing attendance at classes at this facility every year and we believe this is because residents now understand and are feeling the benefits that STC can provide for a better life.”

Ana L. Hernandez, an accounting major graduating from STC this spring, delivers the Student Address.

Dr. Antonio Falcon, a distinguished citizen of Starr County, delivered the key note address at the event to congratulate students on their commitment to success and academic achievement. Ruben Saenz, Starr County Campus Coordinator for STC, was the master of ceremonies. Remarks were made by Benavidez, and Dr. Shirley Reed, founding President of STC. Mrs. Diana Pena, Vice President of Finance and Administrative services for STC, and Juan Mejia, Vice President of Instructional Services for STC, also participated in the celebration.

Dr. Antonio Falcon delivered the keynote address congratulating the students and exhorting them to be well prepared, passionate, and civil to all as they begin a new phase in their lives.

“We are so proud of our graduates and this was a great opportunity for us to show them that we appreciate their effort and dedication,” said Saenz. “The event is something we looked forward to all year because it provided our community with a chance to celebrate and connect prior to the larger graduation ceremony in Hidalgo County.”

STC’s official graduation ceremonies will be held at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, TX on Saturday, May 13, 2006.
