South Texas College Launches College for Professionals
South Texas College has launched a new program called “The College for Professionals” that is focused on serving students interested in earning course credits by attending classes in the evenings, on weekends and via the Internet. The new program will officially begin in the fall 2006 semester, with registration taking place now through August and classes beginning on August 24th. With this program, students can complete either the “Basics”, which are the core general education courses, or one of three degree plans in four semesters.
The first option, called the “Basics”, lets students take their general education core courses. By following this plan, students complete their core courses, including subjects like English, history, science, art and government, in order to continue their work towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
The second option is to earn an Interdisciplinary Studies Associate of Arts Degree. This degree can be obtained by completing the general education core courses and by taking 15 additional hours beyond the basics in at least two different disciplines.
The third option is to complete a Business Administration Associate of Arts.
After earning an associate of Arts degree in Business Administration, students can transfer to a four-year university and earn a Bachelor’s degree in any of the business areas, including accounting, general business, finance, international business, management or marketing.
The fourth option is to earn a Computer Science Associate of Science Degree.
After securing an Associate’s of Science degree in Computer Science, students can transfer to a four-year university and specialize in Computer Software Engineering and/or Computer Science.
“In today’s economy it can be difficult for people to sustain themselves financially while attending school during the day, so we have come up with the College for Professionals program to eliminate that issue and provide a schedule for our non-traditional students to complete their study program within four semesters,” said Anahid Petrosian, assistant to the vice president in the office of the vice president for instructional services for STC. “We are already seeing great interest in the program and expect this option to be extremely popular for the next academic school year.”
In addition to the structure of the program, students will also have access to a variety of tools to help them through their courses. STC’s Success Center is an open lab where students can receive academic tutoring in math, English, reading, writing, Spanish, accounting and other specialized subjects. Students may also utilize this lab as a study area or to work on computer projects. STC also offers computer labs at all three campuses with extended night and weekend hours.
