South Texas College Business Administration Program Receives Prestigious ACBSP Accreditation

South Texas College’s Business Administrations Program has been recognized by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and will now join a membership of nationally recognized colleges. The accreditation covers all six areas of specialization within the program, including Accounting, Banking, Import/Export, Logistics, Management and Marketing.

“This is a huge testament to the quality of our program because we are one of only three other community colleges in the entire state of Texas that has received this honor,” said Daniel Montez, Chair of the Department of Business Administration for STC. “We submitted our application in March 2005 and had to undergo a vigorous site review by the committee. They looked at the qualifications of our staff, the resources and facilities that students have access to and our long term plan for growth. We are so proud to have received this accreditation, especially on the first try, and know that our students will benefit from it tremendously.”

STC’s Business Administration Program started with the inception of the school, but has grown rapidly over the years to include its six areas of specialization. In 2002 the program reached a significant milestone receiving an exemplary rating by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The school has a 90% student success rate, meaning that most students exit the program with a job in their specialty area. That number will likely increase as employers learn of the school’s ACBSP membership.

“ACBSP accreditation is very important and instantly recognized by the business world. This accreditation adds great value to an STC degree and thus shows the College’s commitment to providing its students with a quality education,” Jose Rangel, Senior Vice President of First National Bank. “The banking industry is in great need of well-qualified employees. The ACBSP accreditation will greatly help an STC graduate compete for higher paying positions in banking – or in any other industry. STC’s accredited degree will also allow its students to seek employment or educational opportunities outside of the Rio Grande Valley. The possibilities are vast.”

Students in STC’s Business Administration Program have been anxiously waiting for this accreditation to be passed. Currently, there are more than 1200 students enrolled in the College’s program. Additionally the school graduated 167 students from the program in the spring of 2006 and that number will increase for 2007, as additional economic opportunities open up in the Rio Grande Valley.

“Not every business school has this accreditation and I am excited that my degree will be affiliated with a great school like STC,” said Vanessa Garcia, a Business Administration major at STC. “Most of the people in the program have gone on to good jobs, but I think that this will give us a leg up on others competing for the same jobs.”

In addition to this accreditation, STC’s Business Administration Program has also constructed a course series for the college’s new “College for Professionals.” This program will allow professionals interested in earning an Associate’s degree to complete classes on nights, weekends and via the Internet. The course sequence ensures that students will be able to complete their degree in just four semesters.
