LASS Division Continues To Lead The Way In Faculty Advising Training

More faculty in the Division of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will be able to advise students on what courses to take. The Office of Counseling and Advising and the LASS division announce the most recent faculty members to complete the STC Faculty Advising Training Program.

“This program provides trainees a solid background on the methods and techniques to conduct academic advising” said Paul Hernandez, Dean of Counseling and Advising.

All faculty members completed the workshop series and fulfilled the required advising practicum which consists of two hours a week at the advising centers. In addition, Dr. Margaretha E. Bischoff, interim dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, provided a one-to-one advising session with each faculty advisor last semester.

Tim Weber, psychology instructor said, “The faculty advising training opened my eyes to the many facets of advising students.”

“It’s more than just making sure students have their schedules filled.  The training made me more aware of how important it is to help students choose and complete a major that is right for them and select the courses that will most benefit them.”

The newly trained LASS Faculty Advisors are: William Curtis, Mark Gadson, Eduardo Garcia, Sylvia Garcia, Juanita Gomez, Rebecca Jones, Dr. Eric Reittinger, Richard Smith, Timothy Weber, Nihan Hinojosa, Dr. Emmanuel Belena, Karen Vuurens, Susan Parish, Mark Stough, Geremiah Veglia, Jean H. Daniels, Dr. Darrial Reynolds, Gladys Garcia and Aleli S. Cabrera.

Additional trainings will be held this summer. Faculty members interested in the training must submit a letter of intent to their academic dean.  For more information call the Office of Counseling and Advising at 872-8372.
