Starr County Banks Hire Students Completing the STC Bank Teller Program

Twelve South Texas College students are gaining professional training skills at several local banks in Starr County through the Bank Teller continuing education program offered through STC’s Starr County Campus.

“This is the first time the bank teller program has been offered in Starr County,” stated Dolores Gomez, training manager of the STC Partnership for Workforce Training and Continuing Education. “This program immediately caught the attention of the local banking industry in Starr County. Representatives from the banks have visited our students to explain the demands of the industry, and currently our students have been given the opportunity to be professionally trained by real bank tellers through the job shadowing part of the STC program.”

The students were required to complete 335 hours of classroom training in order to continue with the job shadowing part of the program at the participating local banks in Starr County. The banks involved in this program are International Bank of Commerce (IBC), Lone Star Bank, Texas State Bank, Starr County Teachers Federal Credit Union, and Elsa State Bank (Starr Banking).

Currently, two students from the program have been hired by two of the banks. Veronica Ozuna was hired by IBC, and Baldomero Vela III was hired by the Starr County Teachers Federal Credit Union.

“I believe this program will open many job opportunities for individuals interested in the banking industry at Starr County,” said Emma Gonzalez, President of the Starr County Teachers Federal Credit Union. “I have currently hired Baldomero Vela III, one of the students from the Bank Teller program. He did not have any experience in the industry aside from what he had learned in the program, but with that basic knowledge he was able to meet the requirements that allowed us to offer him a part-time job.”
