UTB/TSC To Welcome STC’s Education Majors

Students seeking to continue with a bachelor’s degree in education can now transfer credits earned at South Texas College to the education program at The University of Texas at Brownsville-Southmost College.  STC and UTB/TSC officials signed an articulation agreement Feb. 24 at the STC Pecan Campus which allows graduates of STC’s associate of arts in teaching degree to transfer college credits to the UTB/TSC bachelor’s degree in education.

“It is a major milestone when two institutions can come together and open doors for students,” said Juan Mejia, STC’s vice president for Instructional Services.

Dr. Shirley A. Reed, STC president, was equally pleased the agreement was materializing. “I hope you will serve as models and pioneers of this effort and encourage other four-year institutions to accept education majors from community college,” Dr. Reed said.

“I extend the challenge to other universities to join in our efforts to produce more qualified teachers,” she added.

The articulation agreement not only allows for the smooth transition to the bachelor’s degree program, but both institutions have made commitments to create financial aid packages for those education majors transferring to UTB/TSC.

In addition, the agreement allows for the transfer of 71 college credits. If distance to Brownsville seems like a barrier for some students, it won’t be. Education classes are offered in Harlingen at the Texas State Technical College campus.

Dr. Carl Stockton, dean of the School of Education at UTB/TSC, says everyone, as parents, should feel a vested interest in this initiative. “Over 200 student teachers that graduated from our institution last semester, but that number was not enough to serve even one school district,” Stockton noted.

“This partnership allows us to fill the need for more teachers in our school districts,” said Stockton.
