A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Extending Influence

STC ceramics conference, exhibit a forum for cultural exchange

South Texas College’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery is proud to present “A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Extending Influence,” which is the second annual Rio Grande Valley ceramics conference and exhibition. The event will include art lectures and ceramics demonstrations, as well as a full display of ceramics works by artists and professors from across the Southwest. The conference takes place on June 13 and 14, 2008 at the college’s Pecan Campus auditorium located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. bldg. D in McAllen. Special ceramics demonstrations will take place at The University of Texas-Pan American Ceramics Lab in Edinburg. All activities are free and open to the public.

“This conference and exhibition promises to be enlightening, stimulating and thought provoking,” said David Freeman, curator and programs coordinator for STC’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery. “We are located on the border of Mexico, one the most southern point’s of the U.S., and this area embraces clay in a global manner. The institutions participating in this conference have forward-thinking students who utilize clay as a material loaded with the ability to speak about everything from vessels, to social and conceptual concerns. The symposium deals with ‘extending influences’ and there are three generations of pioneering teaching talent attending and presenting a comprehensive overview of creative concerns of influence.”

The symposium will include lectures and seminars by Jake Allee of Tyler Junior College, Jeremy Schmidt of Mesa Community College and Central Arizona College, Marcia Selsor of Montana State University-Billings, and Beth Thomas of Galveston College.

Half of the ceramic works will be exhibited at STC Library Art Gallery with the balance being exhibited at UTPA University Art Gallery.  Exhibit opening receptions are on Friday June, 13th from 6-8pm at STC Library Art Gallery-Pecan Campus and Saturday, June 14th from 6-8pm at the UTPA University Art Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibits will be on view from June 2-July 3, 2008 at both the STC Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery and UTPA University Gallery.

The exhibitions feature works by faculty and students from 13 universities and community colleges including The University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College, South Texas College, The University of Texas-Pan American, Galveston College, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Tarrant County College, Tyler Junior College, Mesa Community College, Central Arizona College, The University of North Texas and Montana State University-Billings.
