Why is a computer virus called a virus.

Biologically a virus infects different types of living bodies, so to a computer virus infect computers.  Viruses replicate themselves or make copies of themselves and do it without needing to change or modify a host computer, a virus cannot exist without a host.  Viruses are created by people who know how to write computer programs.  Since the intranets and the Internet has grown tremendously because of the popularity of fast communication capabilities, a lot of viruses are sent through attractive email messages.  Some are sent through mass email as attachments making it difficult to navigate and slowing down the internet.  The inquiring mind like files that are named as a x-wave or audio types.  Technology has made it possible for us to listen to music or view movies via the internet all we need is get a plug-in to hear them and are available for free on the net.  Watch Out for these files, they might be infected.  Click HERE to read and IS&P Alert Notice about downloading such files.

These viruses spread quickly when computers are networked on a LAN especially when email attachments are involved.  Viruses waste disk space and memory, can delay computer executable program functions of your system functions or software program functions.  They definitely cause erratic program behavior.  You can tell your computer is infected when the system or software programs start doing strange things.  User carelessness can also cause viruses to spread by not having the latest virus definition files installed in their computer and not using the virus scanner every time they receive a floppy disk and scan the disk for all files or a particular file.  It is good practice to scan a file that is not yours.  Whenever you get a virus please disconnect the computer from the internet by unplugging the computer cable from the wall outlet; turn of your computer and report it to the IS&P Help Desk at 872-2111.  We consider all virus or virus hoaxes a very serious threat.
