special courses to teach you just
what you need to learn...
How to listen
and speak in English.
How to read and write in English. |

What we will teach you:
We have two courses given together:
1) Listening and Speaking
2) Reading and Writing
- These courses are given four days a week, Monday through Thursday,
for two hours a day all semester. (16 weeks)
- You will learn to listen to and speak English in conversations,
listening for understanding and oral presentations.
- You will also learn English grammar, how to read for comprehension,
how to write using Standard American English.

Who is eligible to be in the
program?
To be eligible for the program,
• Students wishing to enroll in the ESOL program must have a high
school diploma from a foreign country or have passed the GED test in
English or in Spanish.
Students who do not qualify for admission under either of the conditions
above may be considered for conditional acceptance on a case-by- case
basis. These students must be recommended by the ESOL Coordinator, and
a Committee set up by the Admissions Office will review each individual
applicant for approval.
• Also, you must be a resident of Texas or,
• If you are from another country, you must have
legal resident status or have a valid student visa.

How many levels of ESOL courses
do we have?
We have two levels:
Beginners:
ESOL 31: Oral Communications I
ESOL 41: Composition I
Intermediate:
ESOL 32: Oral Communication II
ESOL 42: Composition II

Important!
All classes are taught completely in English, so you must be able to listen
to, understand and speak some English. Your ability to take the
class will be determined by an interview with the ESOL coordinator. |
How do I get in the program?
To get into the program, you need to
make an appointment with the ESOL
staff for an interview for level placement.

an appointment in office J2-1108 on the Pecan Campus. Or ask the staff
in the Developmental Office -J2-804- for more information or call (956)

NOTICE: If you attended college or university
in a foreign country, you may be required to have pertinent college documents
translated and evaluated as part of STC admissions policy for registration
in ESOL courses.

CHECK LIST FOR
ENROLLMENT:
Call

a short interview to see what your level is.
Take
your ESOL Class Level Form and your high school diploma or GED to Admissions
to get registered for class. [Building K]
Apply
for Financial Aid if you are eligible. [Building K]
Go to Cashiers and make payment arrangements [Building K]

What about Financial Aid?
The requirements
for Financial Aid are
listed in the STC Catalog or call
Financial Aid at 618-8375.
If you are otherwise eligible to receive
Financial Aid, then you can use it for
ESOL courses.
