Dependency
Overrides
A
dependency override, changing a dependent student to an independent
student, may be done if the student submits a complete dependency
override request and the Financial Aid Committee approves the
request. The
Financial Aid Committee's decisions are final. Please
note that per federal regulations, none of the conditions listed
below, singly or in combination, qualify as unusual circumstances
or merit a dependency override:
1) Parents refuse to contribute to the student’s education;
2) Parents are unwilling to provide information on the application
or for verification;
3) Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income
tax purposes;
4) Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency.”
If you do not meet the Department of Education’s definition
of an independent student and are claiming to be independent,
please complete the dependency override forms and submit them
with all of the required documentation which is listed on the
forms.

Budget (Cost of Attendance) Appeals
In
cases where a student's eligibility is limited by the budget
(the total amount of aid that a student may receive by federal
regulation, for more information on need,
click here) a budget appeal may be submitted. There are
several components that can be added to the basic student budget
for additional documented costs. Below is a list of additional
components which can be added at South Texas College.
- Dependent
care expenses
-
Additional costs for students with disabilities
Students
who wish to make a budget appeal should submit a letter which
addresses the reason for the appeal and the amounts of expenses
cited. Documentation of the costs must be provided for the budget
appeal to be approved.
