Seventeen local educators are ready to help spread the word about all that South Texas College has to offer after participating in STC’s Academic Leadership Academy this summer.
STC hopes new certification programs spark students’ interest

Welders, plumbers, electricians and air conditioning technicians are integral to infrastructure development, and as more and more baby-boomers begin to retire, fewer young workers are stepping in to take their places. South Texas College is hoping to give these professions a new spark with certificates in Welding Technology, Plumber Assistant, Electrician Assistant, and in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) that aim to increase the number of qualified personnel in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

STC graduate receives Gates Millennium Scholarship

South Texas College graduate DeeAnn Vasquez-Medrano’s academic career has been full of triumphs. Not only was she valedictorian of her graduating class, but she also made history when she graduated from South Texas College’s Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy (DEEA) before she even got out of high school. Vasquez, who was the only one to finish the DEEA program with a 4.0 average, received her associate’s degree in engineering after taking classes at both Donna High School and STC, and this helped her cut the duration of her college career in half.

Donations needed for Shareable Wearables’ back-to-school drive

As fall approaches, so does a new school year. For many kids it’s a fresh start with new school supplies and clothes, but for thousands of children in the Rio Grande Valley, the new school year won’t start off quite so bright. They simply don’t have clothes that fit or their clothes are too worn to wear. But South Texas College’s Culinary Arts Department is cooking up a plan with Renee’s of Sharyland and the Shareable Wearables Program of Buckner Children’s Home to collect donations to buy needy Valley children new back-to-school clothes.
