Mission:

This WAC site has been developed to showcase various best practices in writing, offer support in writing in diverse subjects, and support faculty who give writing assignments and students who have to write those assignments. The site is designed to demonstrate and promote best practices in writing across the curriculum. The results of this research were presented at the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) conference in February 2009 by Dr. Jinhao Wang.

Background:

The WAC site is an outgrowth of a M.A.D.I.S.S.A.R. grant from STC to Dr. Jinhao Wang and Developmental English department. STC Developmental English faculty paired with history and government instructors. Students in government and history were assisted in their class writing projects by Developmental English instructors at the CLE. One of the missions of the grant was to develop a Writing Across the Curriculum website that would feature best practices in writing and assist faculty and students in promoting writing in the classroom. Results of the study revealed that students in academic credit classes need ongoing support in writing thesis statements and supporting paragraphs, organizing papers, constructing logical arguments, using correct English grammar/mechanics, and citing sources to avoid plagiarism.
