Randy was born and raised in rural Illinois near the Iowa and Missouri borders. In 1985, Randy joined the U.S. Army to become a communications and electronics specialist spending five years on active duty. He continues his military career as member of the Texas National Guard. After completing active duty, Randy used his military benefits to attend college. He attended Western Illinois University graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1994 obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree with a primary major in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration, a secondary major in Sociology and a minor in History. Randy continued his education at WIU graduating in 1996 with a Master of Arts in Sociology. While attending graduate school he received the Outstanding Graduate Sociology Student of the Year award in 1996. Randy began his teaching career having taught for several years at three different Community Colleges in rural Illinois and Iowa. He also taught as a full time temporary for two years at WIU and was nominated to the Who's Who Among America 's Teachers in the spring of 2000 before coming to South Texas College in the fall of 2000. Randy received Jaguar Excellence Award from South Texas College in the spring of 2003 and again in 2005.
