What do I need?

  1. General Admission Requirements
    1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
    2. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or 2.75 on the last 60 semester hours.
    3. Reading level: 230 score on THEA/TASP, or C or better in a credit Literature course.
    4. Writing level: 220 score on THEA/TASP, or C or better in a credit Composition course.
    5. Math level: 230 score on THEA/TASP, or C or better in a credit Math course.
    6. Minimum overall score of 61 on the TOEFL-iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test) for students graduating from a university with a language of instruction other than English. Minimum score of 26 on the speaking section of the test.

    7. Access to a computer, internet and e-mail services.
    8. Applicant cannot have taught in Texas for three or more years on a permit and/or certificate.
    9. Completed STC application with official transcripts.
    10. Satisfactory score (53 or higher) on the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Test. If unsatisfactory score, need to take a Critical Reading and Analysis course.
  2. Specific Requirements for Area of Certification
    1. Generalist EC-4, ESL Generalist EC-4, all-level Special Education: 2.5 GPA in 24 semester hours in a combination of core subjects including 6 hours each in English/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
    2. Generalist 4-8, ESL Generalist 4-8: 2.5 GPA in 36 semester hours in a combination of core subjects including 6 hours each in English/Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.
    3. Bilingual Generalist EC-4, Bilingual Generalist 4-8: Same requirements as Generalist EC-4 or Generalist 4-8, respectively, plus a minimum of 6 semester hours of Spanish or degree from a university where the language of instruction is Spanish.
    4. Single subject 4-8 (all core subjects): 2.5 GPA in 24 semester hours of the content area, with 12 advanced hours in the content area for which certification is sought.
    5. Dual subject 4-8 (ELA and Reading/Social Studies): 2.5 GPA in 18 semester hours of each content area, with 6 advanced hours in each content area for which certification is sought.
    6. Single subject 8-12 (all core subjects): 2.5 GPA in 24 semester hours of the content area, with 12 advanced hours in the content area for which certification is sought.
    7. Dual subject 8-12 (Physics/Math): 2.5 GPA in 18 semester hours of each content area, with 6 advanced hours in each content area for which certification is sought.
    8. Triple subject 8-12 (Physical Science/Math/Engineering): 2.5 GPA in 18 semester hours of each content area, with 6 advanced hours in each content area for which certification is sought.
    9. All level (Health, PE): 2.5 GPA in 24 semester hours in the content area, with 12 advanced hours in the content area for which certification is sought.
