PHILOSOPHY OF ART EDUCATION:
Someone once said that "Art is life, and life is art". Whether it be in the visual arts, music, poetry, writing, or theater, sources of inspiration have been passed down through the ages; stimulated by real life events, mythology, religion, and story telling. When art is separate from our daily living, it becomes merely an expression of superficial escape. To bridge this gap is arduous, but only when the gap is bridged does our life become integrated and art an integral expression of ourselves.
Simply put, if I could enact an art curriculum that I believe would be beneficial in the public school system, it would be one of integrating all the disciplines, working in conjunction with the rest of the staff. For example; when the students are studying Greek history, the art of ancient Greece would be introduced. How many students know that the famous statue of the Nike was inspiration for the naming of Nike athletic shoes. Tying in the past with the present not only helps them to learn, but gives them a deeper identity. With that comes a freedom of creativity. Each technique in art has a history attached to it, and teaching different techniques of painting , not only include history, but science and chemistry. I believe that an inter-related approach to teaching art, or any subject, gives the student a broader view of life, and how all aspects are related to make up the whole, and develop a whole well rounded person.
